Science – Periodic Table of Elements

Free Homeschool Lesson Plans, Online Resources, and Printables for a Unit about the Periodic Table of Elements

YouTube Videos:
The Periodic Table Song (I must say, this is AWESOME)  And if it’s too fast – here’s the slow version.

Middle School Science’s website has some fun-looking resources.  Check out the Lego Activity: Using Legos to Represent Elements, Compounds and Mixtures (linked on the page, #5, a little ways down).

Ellen McHenry’s Basement Workshop has a helpful game to download and print off that teaches the arrangement of the elements on the periodic table.  After you’ve learned about the atomic number, her game “Element Connections” may be fun (for older students).  Also as a follow-up for older students, you may enjoy the “Quick Six” game, which reviews each element.

Scroll down the Science: Chemistry page at Collaborative Learning until you see the “Periodic Table” link – you’ll find a printable sorting activity.  Scroll down a little farther to find the “Elements Game” – it’s good too.

Make Atomic cookies!  Fun!

Here are some neat printable downloads about the periodic table of elements that may come in handy.

Take a browse through the interactive periodic table of elements here.  Or try this more advanced version here (I love the way this one looks!). Or, watch a video about each element on this one!  And, there’s one more – perhaps the best one yet – click on any element in this one to see a lesson about that element.

You’ve got to download the handy worksheets at Five J’s.

Let your child practice what they’ve learned with Jefferson Lab’s elements games.

Don’t forget about the option of Khan Academy – there are Chemistry lessons there, including advanced information about the periodic table (for older students).

Homeschool Share has a periodic table lapbook – best for older students.

You can also try out Learn for Your Life’s Matchcard Science Chemistry unit study worksheets.

Science – Parts of an Atom

Free Homeschool Lesson Plans, Online Resources, and Printables for a Unit about the Parts of an Atom

YouTube Videos

Make Atomic cookies!  Fun!

Here’s a fun Science experiment/lesson plan to discover the process of breaking down a large number of atoms into a single atom.

In The Teacher’s Café, teach the basics of what is an atom, plus find links to quizzes, videos, puzzles, reading comprehension worksheets and other activities you might find useful.

In this forum thread, find some really creative suggestions of ways to teach about atoms and molecules from a hands-on approach .

There’s a little gem hidden in the center of this page at Funtastic Unit Studies – find the link within the fourth paragraph or so, the one that says “Molecules Unit” – and you’ll find a unit study about Atoms and Molecules.  It’s really good!

Chem4Kids has a good overview of Atoms and Molecules with descriptive illustrations.

5th Grade Rocks has lyrics to a really cute song, “The Atoms Family.”

This honestly blew my mind, it’s a “Build and Atom” game.  I had no idea what I was doing, but I built Hydrogen!

On Jefferson Lab you’ll find a tour of atoms.
